FAMILY AT HEART

THE PERFECT FIFTH

Scotch whisky has always held an important place at our family gatherings. Long before I was able to enjoy whisky myself, I watched my brothers, uncles, father, and grandfather toast life’s achievements with it. Without even tasting whiskey I had a passion and interest in it. That exposure inspired me to found The Perfect Fifth in 2019.

As I explored the world of Scotch whisky, I noticed a serious lack of stellar single cask bottlings. Our company bridges that gap by sourcing the best quality whisky from all over Scotland. We don’t limit ourselves to any one region or distillery, we bring the best of every Scotch to you, one cask at a time. By seeking to exhibit a unique and niche view of these incredible distilleries, we are able to deliver nothing but remarkable single cask Scotch whisky -the forgotten hidden gems left to mature even longer in the corners of award-winning distilleries.

After I began uncovering these whiskeys, I turned to someone I could trust, someone I had seen passionately enjoying whisky many times before -my brother Ben. Together, we travel Scotland sampling cask after cask until we the few worthy to be The Perfect Fifth. We then carefully deliver them to the market in incredibly curated limited single cask releases.

 And thus, as our story and brand began with family, we know so too will be its final chapter—enjoyed around the table during the holidays, toasting at an engagement, celebrating a birth, and all of life’s accomplishments. We look forward to sharing them with you! Cheers

Mission Statement

The mission of VRO is restoring total health to local veterans in an environment of compassion, mercy, and love.

Overview

Veterans Rural Outreach (VRO) began serving veterans throughout Shelby County, Kentucky, and surrounding counties in 2015- providing emergency shelter, food, remodeling homes, and advocating for veterans in need. While serving these veterans, VRO saw a need for providing a community for homeless veterans. In 2019, VRO partnered with Awake Ministries and Crossroads Missions to break ground on six tiny homes in downtown Shelbyville, Kentucky. On October 1, 2020, Veterans Village opened these fully furnished homes for homeless veterans in need. The centerpiece of Veterans Village, a 2,300 square foot community center, opened the following year. The community center provides space for all area veterans and those who want to serve them to gather throughout the year. On April 18th, 2022, VRO assumed full responsibility of Veterans Village. The VRO Board of Directors, staff, and supporters are excited to partner with the greater community as we walk alongside our nation's veterans in their time of need.

Countdown to USA 250!

Logo Contest

America is getting ready to celebrate in a very big way – our nation will turn 250 years old on July 4, 2026!! In anticipation of this special anniversary, the Shelby County Historical Society is announcing a logo contest open to students in grades 5-8. We want students to design a logo that can be used in a variety of ways (posters, banners, event advertising, etc.) to represent Shelby County and make a statement about our state and county’s role in establishing the United States of America.

Criteria for logo design:

·        Must be appropriate – it must embody and convey feelings that represent the Spirit of 1776/signing of the Declaration of Independence;

·        Must be distinctive – what says “Shelby County”? What are we known for?;

·        Keep the design clean & simple – it cannot be so detailed that it cannot be reproduced easily;

·        Must be understandable & functionable – when someone sees it, they should automatically think, “This is Shelby County!”;

·        Must incorporate the all-important color scheme: red, white & blue and the overall theme of “Countdown to USA 250!”;

·        Make it memorable – combine what symbolizes Shelby County and America best. You only get to celebrate 250 years once!;

·        Remember font and symbolism are important;

·        Most of all – have FUN with it! This is a birthday party for America!

Please do not repeat a logo already in use. Many towns across Kentucky and America are already celebrating this momentous occasion. All artwork will be judged by the Countdown to USA 250! Committee.

The winning artist will be awarded $100 cash AND a goody bag provided by the Shelby Regional Arts Council.

DEADLINE to submit artwork: May 6, 2024. Submit all artwork by email to: director@shelbykyhistory.org; drop off at our office at: 627 Main St., Shelbyville, KY 40065; or mail to: P.O. Box 444, Shelbyville, KY 40066.

Sponsored by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee.

Gov. Beshear Proclaims April 29–May 3 Ansel Williamson Week in Kentucky

Churchill Downs creates new Ansel Williamson Award; Contributions of Black horsemen to Thoroughbred racing recognized ahead of Kentucky Derby 150

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 1, 2024) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear joined leaders of Churchill Downs and the Ed Brown Society to sign a proclamation naming April 29 to May 3 Ansel Williamson Week in the commonwealth and recognized the contributions of Black horsemen to Thoroughbred racing ahead of the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Churchill Downs also announced that it is honoring Williamson’s legacy to the sport with the creation of a new award, the Ansel Williamson Leading Trainer of the Year Award, which will be given to the top trainer of the year, starting this year and to be awarded on Champions Day of 2025. Churchill Downs also announced the Oliver Lewis Leading Jockey of the Year Award and H.P. McGrath Leading Owner of the Year Award.

“Today, we honor and recognize Ansel Williamson for his immeasurable contribution to Kentucky Derby history,” said Gov. Beshear. “As we celebrate the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, let’s remember the historic African Americans like Williamson for their contributions to Kentucky and across the horse racing industry.”

Ansel Williamson was born into slavery in Virginia in 1810. The earliest record of Williamson’s career was in the 1850s, while enslaved in Alabama, though many believe his work with horses began much earlier. Williamson became a sought-after horse trainer who also spent time in Kentucky.

Williamson was instrumental in training African American jockey and trainer Edward Dudley Brown. Williamson secured his place in history by training the Thoroughbred racehorse Aristides, who arrived at the Kentucky Derby as a pacesetter and left as the first Derby champion in that inaugural race in 1875.

Williamson married his wife, Ellen, in October 1870, and they had a daughter and grandchildren. His grandsons worked with Thoroughbreds in New York, New Jersey and Kentucky.

Williamson passed away in June of 1881, in Lexington, but his legacy has lived on. In 1998, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame inducted Williamson. In 2011, a highway marker dedicated to the horse Aristides was installed at the University of Kentucky’s Coldstream Research Campus. This is the site of the former farm where Williamson trained. The marker stands in part as a tribute to Williamson’s legacy.

“It is a great privilege to join Governor Beshear and the Ed Brown Society in the important mission to share the legacy of the great Black horsemen of the industry who contributed so much to the first Kentucky Derby and the years to follow,” said Ben Huffman, vice president of racing for Churchill Downs Racetrack. “The Ansel Williamson Leading Trainer of the Year Award, the Oliver Lewis Leading Jockey of the Year Award and the H.P. McGrath Leading Owner of the Year Award will be an annual tradition that will allow us to share the story of these trailblazers of horse racing for years to come.”

Clark Williams, president of the Ed Brown Society said, “The Ed Brown Society celebrates the rich history of African Americans in the equine industry, so we are delighted to continue our ongoing collaboration with Governor Beshear in amplifying this part of our work by honoring Ansel Williamson – a tremendous horsemen who has not received the accolades that his legacy richly deserves.”

Today’s announcement furthers the work that the Beshear administration, Churchill Downs and the Ed Brown Society have done to recognize African Americans’ impact on horse racing.

In 2021, Gov. Beshear proclaimed April 25 through May 1 as Ed Brown Society Week in the commonwealth. The Ed Brown Society is named after Edward D. Brown, who was born into slavery in Lexington in 1850, but through his tenacity and love of the sport, developed into one of the most accomplished African American horsemen in the history of Thoroughbred racing.

The Ed Brown Society was established by Greg Harbut and Ray Daniels, whose horse, Necker Island, ran in the 2020 Kentucky Derby. The society celebrates the rich history of African Americans in the equine industry and creates opportunities for young African American Kentuckians.

In 2022, the Governor was at Churchill Downs to celebrate the organization becoming the highest level Ed Brown partner.

Last month, the Governor presented this year’s Governor’s Derby Celebration poster. The artist is Ken Burney, a contemporary painter based in Lexington. His work on the Derby Celebration poster pays homage to some of the Kentucky Derby’s famous Black jockeys. Burney’s artwork depicts Oliver Lewis riding Aristides in 1875, Isaac Murphy riding Buchanan in 1884 and Isaac Lewis riding Montrose in 1887.

“African American jockeys won 15 of the first 28 Kentucky Derbies,” Gov. Beshear said. “Their importance has often been forgotten in the history of horse racing, and we are working to change that and make sure they too are remembered for generations to come.”

Gov. Beshear Provides Team Kentucky Update

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 2, 2024) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear provided updates on economic development; Small Business Week; the groundbreaking for a new recycling center in Paris; and Mental Health Awareness Month. He also named everyone involved in making the 150th Kentucky Derby possible as this week’s Team Kentucky All-Stars.

Economic Development

Gov. Beshear recapped his recent travel to Germany and Switzerland to meet with leaders at existing Kentucky companies and businesses considering future investment in the United States. During his trip, the Governor talked with leaders from more than 100 companies that employ more than 15,000 Kentuckians across 80 facilities in the commonwealth. Gov. Beshear also visited more than 25 companies that employ tens of thousands of Kentuckians. Germany is one of the largest European investors in Kentucky, with over 90 companies operating in the state. He met with leaders from Mubea, Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, Henkel, Eberspächer Group and BFW Envirotec. Of the companies visited, 10 have their North American headquarters in Kentucky.

“Not only is it important to say thank you to these companies for employing Kentuckians, but I also want to thank the German and Swiss governments and people for being wonderful hosts during this trip,” said Gov. Beshear. “The commonwealth’s ties are strong, and I look forward to even more exciting economic and jobs investments in the years ahead.”

The Governor congratulated a vital Kentucky automotive manufacturer, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK), on the company receiving a 2024 Corporate Investment & Community Impact (CiCi) Award from Trade & Industry Development magazine.

Gov. Beshear announced continued momentum within the state’s manufacturing sector as leaders at EPC-Columbia Inc., an industry-leading plastic injection molding company, will be expanding the company’s manufacturing operation in Lebanon with a $3.6 million investment creating 21 full-time, Kentucky jobs.

The Governor congratulated Epic Flight Academy on cutting the ribbon for its new FAA Part 147 aircraft mechanic school at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).

Gov. Beshear highlighted new growth in Kentucky’s booming manufacturing sector as KOI Superior Walls announced plans to locate a new manufacturing facility in Boone County, a project that is creating 73 new full-time jobs.

The Governor announced further site and building development across the state as three Kentucky Product Development Initiative projects were approved for nearly $2.6 million in state funding.

Since the beginning the Beshear administration, more than 1,000 private-sector new-location projects have been announced, totaling over $30.6 billion and creating more than 52,700 jobs for Kentuckians.

Small Business Week

For National Small Business Week, Gov. Beshear emphasized the importance of small businesses in the commonwealth. Kentucky is home to more than 363,000 small businesses which employ over 700,000 Kentuckians.

“This week, we are recognizing all of the small businesses across our state, which are truly the backbone of our economy,” said Gov. Beshear. “We simply could not have achieved the incredible record of economic success we’ve had over the past few years without the support of these companies.”

The Governor highlighted several programs that support these businesses, including the Kentucky Small Business Tax Credit, the State Trade Expansion Program and the Kentucky Small Business Credit Initiative. To learn more about how Team Kentucky can help your small business, visit kyinnovation.com.

Paris Recycling Center Groundbreaking

The Governor joined community members in Paris Monday to break ground on a new recycling convenience center. The new recycling center will replace the current waste transfer station located in the West Side neighborhood. The new center will be away from residential areas. The project received $2 million in funding from Kentucky’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Gov. Beshear and the General Assembly approved an additional $1.5 million for the project.

Mental Health Awareness Month

For Mental Health Awareness Month, the Governor highlighted the steps Team Kentucky is making to ensure Kentuckians can get the help they need and deserve. Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 lifeline, connecting those facing a risk of suicide, mental health distress or an addiction crisis to counselors who can help, has received more than 67,500 calls, 18,500 text messages and 13,000 online chats from Kentuckians. “In Kentucky, we recognize that it’s okay to not be okay,” said Gov. Beshear. “Thankfully, now we have more tools to help people when they need it. It is our job, based on our faith and values, to do everything we can to help our fellow human beings, and that’s exactly what the people who are answering the 988 hotline, and so many more, are doing.”

Team Kentucky All-Stars

Gov. Beshear recapped events that have been held leading up to the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. Yesterday, the Governor joined leaders of Churchill Downs and the Ed Brown Society to sign a proclamation naming April 29–May 3 Ansel Williamson Week in the commonwealth and recognized the contributions of Black horsemen to Thoroughbred racing ahead of the Kentucky Derby.

Gov. Beshear also named everyone involved in making the Derby possible as this week’s Team Kentucky All-Stars.

“As record crowds come to Churchill on this historic event, I want to thank everyone across Kentucky for helping to make Derby so special,” said Gov. Beshear. “To everyone who is in any part of the hospitality that is the Kentucky Derby, from anybody taking bets at Churchill Downs to anybody trying to keep it clean to those working our hotels that are welcoming so many people to the servers in our restaurant workers: Thank you. Thank you for making this one of the most sought-after destinations and events in the world and helping us do it year after year.”
