Everyone wants to raise chickens - and harvest fresh eggs - these days. But how do you start your own flock of laying hens? *How many hens do you need to provide enough eggs for the family? *How do you take care of baby chicks? *What do you feed laying hens? *How do you keep the foxes, skunks, raccoons, dogs, hawks, etc. away from your birds? *Do you need to buy one of those $1,000 coops you see on the internet? To answer those questions and more, Extension will offer a crash course in everything chicken on Monday, February 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Shelby County Extension Office, 1117 Frankfort Road, Shelbyville KY 40065. The class is FREE but please call to register, 633-4593. If we get snowed out on the 22nd, we'll move to Monday, February 29. Class will be taught by Walt Reichert, Extension Horticulture Technician.
